All of their contraptions seem to feature lots of gears and moving parts, such as their lumbering clockwork men and bizarrely architected flyers (how these decidedly non-aerodynamic vehicles stay airborne is something of a mystery). Each story segment sees the desperate young lord working with and controlling units originating from different nations, including: the Vinci, a race of humans who use steam powered machinery the Alin, who employ magical machines and weaponry and the Cuotl, an advanced race with futuristic energy weapons and structures. The campaign mode sees players working through three distinct chapters as a young noble seeking to avenge the destruction of his home city by a bad guy known as the Doge. People who have even a passing familiarity with the genre will be able to figure out the basics in a matter of minutes, and once you get going the game's accessibility and rapid pace combine to keep you playing, at least for a while. Its greatest strength is that it's remarkably playable. National borders, attrition damage when your armies ventured into enemy territory, nation development and research - it all added up to an exciting combination of RTS military action and Civilization-style empire growth.īig Huge Games' eagerly anticipated sequel, Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, doesn't quite live up to its predecessor's reputation for innovation, but it's still fun - most of the time. Many of its key elements were either completely new to RTS games or acted as a refreshing twist to existing concepts. Rise of Nations was an invigorating addition to the real-time strategy genre when it was released three years ago.
